Marwari Knowledge of the day - Names of various parts inside a house
Architecture of a house in western Rajasthan is very interesting. There are different rooms and areas, specifically designed of various different purposes. These are not in only few rich people's houses, but it's common in all old houses. Following are the marwari names of various parts of a house along with the purpose they are used for -
चोकी (chauki) - a small sitting place outside the house, with a height of around 2-3 ft. made for people to sit and take rest.
नाल (naal) - stairs
शाल (shaal) - first place after entering the house, it's like a half open structure, with lots of windows.
बरहाली (barhali) - The space in front of the rooms.
देवलखनो (devalkhano) - Drawing room, where guests sit.
चॊक ( chok) - space, which is usually in the middle of house and doesn't have a roof.
कोठी (kothi) - A room
कोठरी - a relatively small room
ओरो - a room inside a room, it has the only one entrance and that is from another room
पडपीतो (padpeeto) - Room, inside a ओरो, i.e. last room in the two rooms chain, it has only one entrance and that is from another room, it has no windows. generally used for keep valuable stuff.
डिलोन (dillon) - A large hall, it generally has a large bed and is used mainly by the oldest people in the house.
डागलो (daaglo) - first terrace of the house
मालियो (maaliyo) - a room at the first terrace of the house.
मेढी (medhi) - a room at the top of stairs to the terrace, it's a small space usually used to keep beds etc.
तिपड(tipad) - top most terrace of the house, it's a small terrace, generally without stairs.
कोठोरियो (kothariyo) - a space on the side of terrace, where curd, milk etc. are kept at night
गुन्जार (gunjar) - basement, generally it's situated at the front or the backside of house
भखारी (bhkhari) - a very small space, which is dark and used to keep unused stuff, it's generally situated under the stairs
तिलभवरो (tilbhavro) - a space inside the floor of basement, usually hidden, it's used to store valuables, grains etc.
पलिंडो - a space where drinking water is kept, it's generally outside the kitchen and near the stairs to the terrace.
तारथ (taarth) - toilet room
नावनघर (nawanghar) - bathroom
बाडो (bhado)- garden/open space
